Whether it be a cold, perspiring bottle of light beer or a tall mug of ale, beer has long been one of man’s fondest ways of relaxing, socializing, and just having fun. The production and consumption of beer can be traced back to history, as its popularity has encouraged each country to come up with their own traditional blends and brewing techniques. These have all contributed to the wide range of textures and flavors beer now has, and any beer enthusiast concerned with drinking or serving it should know the different types of beer.
Ale is the old name for fermented drinks primarily made from malted barley, and goes way back in time. Ale has a sweeter, fruitier and fuller taste. There are several variations of ale from each part of the world: old ale, India pale ale, altbier, mild ale, cream ale, brown ale, bitter ale, Scotch ale, Belgian ale, stout and porter.
Belgian ale has more malt and yeast, and includes Saison, Belgian red, Flemish brown ale, Trappist and Belgian golden ale. Light ale is an English brew for social drinking, while India pale ale is a hoppy, premium kind of ale with a fruity taste. Altbier is German for “old.” It is a kind of ale recognized as the city of Dusseldorf’s specialty. An altbier is typically copper in color and has a clean, well-rounded flavor. Cream ale, on the other hand, is North American, made because people now want to drink lager. It is mild, sweet and pale in color, fermented at warm temperatures. Stout is made from roasted malts or barley. It is dark, full and hoppy, originally from Ireland. Oatmeal stout is a kind of beer that has a sweet and nutty, chocolate-coffee taste
Lager, as most everyone knows, is German. The name comes from “lagern,” meaning “to store,” which refers to the way this drink is kept in very cold temperatures. Lager is commonly a Dutch and Czech as well as a German blend that range from sweet to bitter, pale to almost black in color. Lagers have less alcoholic content and taste drier than other types of beer. Pilsner, from Plzen (Pilsen) in the Czech Republic, is a golden lager with a crisp, dry, bitter taste. Light beer is actually a “lighter” kind of pilsner initially from North America.
There are specialty beers made from a combination of ale and lager recipes, or brews that don’t fit into the category of either. An example is Weizenbier or Weissbier, from the German term for “wheat.” This beverage is golden, but may sometime be cloudy in appearance, with a spicy taste. It can be drunk with lemon and is quite refreshing. Other specialty beers are smoked beer, also called Rauchbier, where malt is fired over wood to give the beer a smoky flavor. There are also fruit or vegetable beers and herb or spice beers that have brewers adding all kinds of fruit extracts, syrups, herbs and spices to give a beer a unique quality.
